Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green HardDisk 3.5&#34; 2TB

Ottimo hdd, silenzioso, molto capiente, affidabile. L'ho preso per fare backup di documenti, programmi, file multimediali, ecc... e in ormai diversi anni di utilizzo non ha mai fatto una piega.
Rimane sempre tra i più consigliati, ora anche nei tagli maggiori.
Se si vuole affidabilità garantita 24h su 24, per un utilizzo intensivo, si può valutare la serie Red della stessa marca, più indicata per questo scopo.

Hard disk capiente, fresco, silenzioso ed economico.

Impossibile caricare il contenuto multimediale.

Il disco WD20EARS della serie green risulta molto silenzioso e scalda pochissimo, per contro la velocità di rotazione appare limitata a 5.400 rpm penalizzando la velocità di scrittura/lettura in particolare con file di piccole dimensioni.
Sconsiglio assolutamente l'utilizzo di questa unità come disco di sistema (su cui installare il sistema operativo), risulta invece ottimo come secondo disco in cui immagazzinare i propri documenti oppure alloggiato all'interno di un box esterno USB/SATA/eSata.
Secondo alcuni, l'hard disk potrebbe essere soggetto ad un problema legato al frequente parcheggiamento delle testine che comporterebbe il rapido superamento dei 300.000 cicli LLC (Load Cycle Count) garantiti da Western Digital. A scanso di equivoci ho utilizzato l'utility Wdidle3 per aumentare il tempo di parcheggio delle testine portandolo a 300 secondi.
Eccellente il rapporto prezzo dimensioni (2TB pagati 61,66 euro OTTOBRE 2011).

Ottimo prodotto!
Non brilla per la velocità in accesso all'hdd ma fa il suo dovere, ha una grande capienza, non scalda e non consuma molta energia.
L'ho utilizzato in un sistema nas e gli unici problemi mi sono stati dati dal case del nas, non dall'hard disk.
Questo hdd è ottimo, lo mettono anche in time capsule!

E' proprio come da oggetto. Lo uso per archiviare dati AV su cassetti estraibili e box trasportabili è perfetto. Affidabile e al prezzo giusto...se li facessero da 4-5 GB....

checche se ne dica di ogni sugli hard disk credo che la WD faccia ottimi hard disk . IL segreto alla fine e' solo uno : non spostarli da accessi e lasciare sempre fermo li dove' il corpo che lo contiene .... a me ancora oggi da un anno e passa dall'acquisto mi va da dio .

Si è rotto appena scaduta la garanzia. :-(

Win7-Partitioned & Working Well Via Firewire Enclosure With WinXP

Just got this Western Digital 2 TB WD20EARS Green Drive and it appears to be working fine and running cool inside a MacAlly G-S350SUA 3.5" SATA USB/Firewire case via Firewire connection to a Gateway FX530XM desktop PC running Windows XP Pro with SP3. I avoided the alignment issues with this "Advanced Format" hard drive running under WinXP that would normally require either installing a jumper on drive pins 7-8 or running the WD alignment software if formatted under WinXP, by first connecting the drive in this enclosure via USB to a netbook running Win7 and using the Win7 disk management utility to create a single partition that I plan to use for photo storage and system backups. I selected the "MBR" type for the new partition to allow Win7 to make sectors already aligned and compatible with WinXP and formatted NTFS. I also ran the long disk scan for bad sectors to verify disk integrity, which took about four hours I think. All went fine with no errors, then the enclosure and drive were moved to the WinXP machine and connected via an available firewire port. The formatted drive capacity is reported as 1.81 TB, as expected.

The WinXP Backup utility has now been running continuously for about four hours so far to create a backup copy of my primary C: drive (at a rate of about 30GB/hr), and the aluminum case of the MacAlly drive enclosure is only slightly warm to the touch. Note: This backup finished later without any problem and likewise for a folder of 20GB of files copied in about 40 minutes. The relatively cool temp was expected, as this variable speed green drive has a maximum startup power consumption of well under the case's 2amp rated power supply, and well under 1 amp while running, so it generates very little heat. My PC is 4 y/o, and I'm not that concerned about transfer rates or access time for my purposes, so I didn't really need the other MacAlly drive enclosure with the faster firewire port or a faster hard drive.

So far, I am happy with this hard drive, and I'm glad I found David Siegfried's Option 3 suggestion posted on 9-1-11 to simply partition & format this drive using Win7 or Vista to avoid having to use a jumper or run special aligment software for WinXP compatibility. This is the best solution for WinXP users in my opinion, and is easy when you are using an external drive case, as I did. I wanted to avoid the jumper solution, in case I also wanted to run it under Win7 later, because I read that removing the jumper deletes the data. I read that it's not the formatting that creates a problem under WinXP but the creation of the partition. I didn't even need any additional drive cable for this MacAlly case, since the drive plugs directly into the case's connectors on its circuit board, or to run any other software in WinXP. Nor did I need to change any BIOS setting. The drive runs very quietly, and seems to be quite responsive. Great price.

C'est le disque dur à avoir pour le stockage de données! Silencieux, économique/écologique, grand espace de stockage, longévité impressionnante... J'en ai 5 comme ça dans mon serveur et ils tournent non stop depuis des années sans aucun problème! J'ai testé des dizaines de disques durs et, maintenant que les 2 seules marques restantes sont Western Digital et Seagate, je peux vous dire que les plus solides et les plus fiables sont bien les Western Digital!
Ces disques sont increvables.
Attention : j'ai bien précisé que c'est pour le stockage de données... Le temps d'accès au disque et la mise en veille risque d'agacer ceuxx qui voudraient l'utiliser pour les jeux vidéo. Ils conviennent pour le multimédia en tout cas!

Ideal als HTPC-Komponente

Da ja schon einige Bewertungen zu der Festplatte vorliegen, bewerte ich hier die Eigenschaften der Platte speziell für einen Media-PC, weil ich das gute Stück genau dafür einsetze.

Wer einen HTPC bereits im Einsatz hat weiß, dass die Kapazität der Festplatte, die man zur Aufzeichnung von TV-Sendungen nutzt, schneller dahin schmilzt, als es einem lieb ist. So nimmt ein "Tatort" in Standard-Qualität schnell mal 5 GB in Anspruch. In HD-Qualität kommt man mit etwas Überhang auf etwa 10 GB.

Wenn man dann noch andere Serien automatisch aufzeichnen lässt, ist eine 1-GB-Festplatte ruckzuck belegt. Aus diesem Grund habe ich mich nach dem Lesen einiger Produktbewertungen für die WD20EARS entschieden. Die Variante "EADS" verfügt nur über 32 Megabyte Cache und wurde teilweise eher negativ besprochen. Das sei nur der Vollständigkeit halber angemerkt.

Nach der Installation der Festplatte, wurde sie vom Betriebssystem Windows 7 sofort erkannt. Nach einem Neustart und der Formatierung konnte es also losgehen.

Sehr positiv aufgefallen ist mir das praktisch nicht vorhandene Betriebsgeräusch. Für eine HTPC-Platte ein wesentlicher Gesichtspunkt. Die alte Platte verursachte trotz teilweiser Entkoppelung ein dumpfes Brummen. Das war zwar nicht sehr störend, aber hörbar. Jetzt ist mein Media-Rechner praktisch lautlos. Vermutlich würde man etwas hören, wenn man sein Ohr auf das Gehäuse legte, aber aus etwa 1 Meter Entfernung höre ich nichts.

Ich habe die Schreib- und Lesegeschwindigkeit nicht mittels eines Tools ausgelesen. Ich habe stattdessen einen praxisbezogenen Test durchgeführt:

Ich habe gleichzeitig zwei Aufnahmen in HD-Auflösung (ARD und ZDF HD) und zwei Aufnahmen in Standardauflösung durchgeführt und gleichzeitig eine bereits vorhandene Aufzeichnung in HD-Qualität angesehen. Das ganze über einen Zeitraum von etwa 2 1/2 Stunden. Das ist die in der Praxis höchste Belastung, die auf die Festplatte in meinem System zukommen kann. Die Festplatte blieb während der ganzen Zeit lautlos und die Aufnahmen waren auch fehlerfrei. Man sollte meinen, dass der Datendurchsatz, der während des hier beschriebenen Tests auf die SATA-Festplatte zukommt, für diese kein Problem darstellen sollte. Jedoch hatte ich in dieser Richtung Probleme mit zwei 500-GB-Platten von Hitachi. Bluescreens waren seinerzeit die Folge.

Ich bin vollauf zufrieden und vergebe für die Western Digital WD20EARS 5 Sterne.

The Apple Time Capsule is a wonderful back-up device that integrates without joins into the Snow-Leopard operating system. The section of the OS that uses it is 'Time Machine'. There is nothing quite like it in the Windows/PC environment - totally invisible to the user and backs-up the computer every hour, wirelessly. Great to get files from when recovery is needed... blah blah.

All very well, but what has this to do with a Western Digital 2TB 'Green' hard drive? Plenty... read on.

The Time Capsule (TC) overheats, this is a simple design flaw that as an engineer I can get around and modify the device to 'run cool'. I provide this as a service to Apple users and have modified about 50x devices now. I was asked by a friend if I could 'expand' the memory of the TC, whilst it was opened up and being modified for a cool-as-a-cucumber new lifestyle.

Traditionally the early TC internal drives were 500GB and 1TB, with 2TB being offered only comparatively recently, with a high premium price to get such a size. Fitting the drive is simplicity, as I had already dismantled the device to its major component parts. Using Apple 'Airport Utility' I was able to format the drive and erase anything that may have been on it. It works PERFECTLY and is a much more reasonable cost than buying new!

The TC modification is under the 'Eutechnics' name and makes an internal fan, which normally does nothing meaningful, run at half-speed. This creates a slight susurrus that is probably more noticeable than the disc drive sound, which is inaudible - truly. The added advantage that the drive speed is variable and only runs at the rate needed for the task demanded of it will ensure it has a very long and productive life.

The TC will be quite demanding for disc space initially and make take several hours copying a disc image for the first time. Thereafter however, it merely records the changes every hour, which does not stress the drive and is usually complete in a few minutes.

I cannot praise the drive enough. It has made a good product excellent and with the Eutechnics modification will almost guarantee a very long back-up life.

I have bought a LOT of the 2TB WD Caviar drives. I have had excellent results with them on my iMac. I use them primarily for data storage where fast data retrieval is not a consideration. I'm more concerned with plugging them into these USB-based drive docks when I need the data. However, I'm also interested in them from an electrical perspective, just because ... well, just because I'm interested in them. Over the years I have worked my way up the ladder of hard drive storage capacities. Like many of you, I've been rather appalled at how hot these older models would get. I swear, you could fry an egg on some of them. I never felt comfortable with their longevity, fearing that they would most likely burn themselves up. Fortunately, none did.

When the Caviar Green product line came out (1TB was when I first took notice), I was quite intrigued at the claimed power reduction. In electronics, heat is the main enemy of components. Usually every 10 degree C rise in temperature translates into a halving of component life. The Caviar brand looked like a way to get a much more reliable drive if the power reduction numbers actually panned out.

I took one of the drives in to work where I have fancy test gear at my disposal. In particular, I have some very good Tektronix current probes that let me measure DC and AC currents. I built a little cable that let me get to the +12V and +5V lines so that I could clamp my current probes around the wires to measure current consumption. I connected the two power leads to power supplies so that I could also vary the two voltages. In this fashion, I can accurately see and measure power consumption of the drive as I exercise the drive. I get far more accurate measurements this way than you can with a simple watt-meter, which seldom let you see fractional watts.

Since I can't (actually, don't know how to) embed scope photos in this review, all I can do is verbally describe my observations. My tests are far from extensive, but they will give you a good idea of how much power these drives draw, and when they draw it.

* When the drive is just sitting there, doing nothing but spinning, the +12V current drain is 0.24A and the +5V drain is 0.13A. That totals 4.2 watts of power during idle. I have not measured earlier, high-power drives, but I'm willing to bet the Caviar Greens draw at most half the power of traditional hard drives. I would not be surprised if it were 1/3 the power.

* If you shut off one voltage, the other supply stops drawing all power. It's a convenient way to power the drives on and off. I would suggest power cycling the +5V rail as the circuitry to shut off the +5V supply with a simple PFET is simpler than that for the +12V rail.

* When the drives are first powered up, +5V draws an almost constant 500-600 mA. +12V current is a ramp, starting at 200 mA and works its way up to 600 mA after about 10 seconds, when the drive is then up to speed. At this point, the +12V peak current drops down to idle spinning) current of 0.24A. It does not vary much after this, regardless of disk activity (erase, write, read, etc.). On the other hand, the +5V supply current gets busy. It's pretty clear that the head servo is driven from the +5V supply and not the +12V supply. It's hard to verbally describe the +5V current, but I would say the average current during head movement activity is about 400 mA. When there is no activity, the +5V current is about 0.13A. When the drive is done doing what it is doing, then it drops into the 4.2W idle power mode that I mentioned above. If you are a power supply designer, you should be aware that these DC currents I cite are averages, and that you have a "hash" of AC currents that result in the average values I list. The +5V current has a hash of about 300mA p-p, and the +12V current hash is maybe 400mA p-p.

* I have never succeeded in getting OSX to put the drives to sleep. I've tried all the utilities in the Mac universe (SpinDown, Cocktail), but no matter what you do, the drives never want to got to sleep, at least for me. If WD puts out a utility for the PC, they certainly offer no support for OSX. Even if you properly eject the drives from the desktop, they sit there spinning and drawing 4.2W. Hardly seems "fully green" to me.

* During the idle mode, my infrared thermometer measures a case temperature rise of 12 degrees C, which is a pretty low number. UL safety limits for human hand touch temperatures are usually between 50-55 degree C -- you'll begin to pull your hand back at that temperature range. So if the drive is 12 degrees above ambient, and you are sitting at normal room temperatures (25 degrees), then your drive temperature is only about 37 degrees (98.6 degrees F, just like a human!). This explains why people are reporting that the drive "feels pretty cool." As these things go, they do indeed run quite cool.

Here's hoping that some of you more technically-inclined customers out there find this data useful.
