It performs similar to a 3TB WD Blue 5400rpm dirve I have. As far as I can tell the warranty is the only thing different and the marketing branding they put on the red drives for "NAS" usage.
If I had more RAID ports on my motherboard i'd likely be running two of these but the data I have on it isn't change often so backups are good enough for it.
I prefer the 5400rpms because i don't need the extra speed and want maximum durability and minimum heat and power usage.
Nothing more to say, the thing is silent, no clicks, no weird noises and been working great just as my similar WD Blue drives of the same size and speed. Can't say the same about Seagate drives, most of the seagates i own click and sound like they are dying the second I start using them.
As for the drives, well they are very quiet and replacing the drive (one at a time because of issue above) was a snap. They seem to run substantially cooler than the WD Green drives I was originally using. Many told me not to use them (green) but they've lasted 3 years (3 years UPTIME) with absolutely no issues until a week ago when one of the drives dropped out. Hopefully these new RED drives will give me years of prolonged service.
Amazon.ca - please change the maximum order number on these drives.
For the price and longevity, replaced with identical drive... was expecting a bit longer usage cycle for this NAS model, but it is 1 of 4 so far that had issues so perhaps just the odd ball of the batch in my previous ones.
New drive installed quick and easily and was recognized without issue and started its rebuild (which given the size of the drives took a while for Raid 5).
Very good purchase and price point, and was able to get quickly.
I replaced a desktop rated HDD ... 1TB WD Black, which i repurposed on my other pc.
During windows configuration I had ONE little "issue" ... which is actually more like a limitation on the partitioning table.
Anyway, it was required for me to use GPT to thus enable me to use/see the full 3TB. This actually turned out to work better that way for me. As i then set my drives in a Dynamic and Mirrored(Raid 1) configuration. Once i did that, everything was A-OKAY!
The drive performs exactly the same as my previous drive... actually better, as it powers/spins up much faster!
so now i'm a happy camper that my data will now be safe on these reliable NAS designed drives!
Very pleased with the reliability.
