5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money

I had went back and forth on getting an SSD for about a month. I had always heard that they were amazing with some saying it was the single greatest performance increase you can get for your computer. I also heard from others that they were indeed quicker, but normally only for start up, shut down, and very intense programs. One day I saw a great price on Amazon and decided to pull the trigger.

When it came to choosing an SSD the Samsung 830 was a no brainer for me. Everywhere I looked it offered the best price to performance ratio, with only the OCZ Vertex models coming close. I have had good luck with Samsung so I stuck with them.

Pros: Windows 7 setup was a breeze and extremely quick. Actually, I messed up on the first install and had to reformat and perform another one immediately afterward and I still got through both installs in about 30 minutes.

The best way to describe the start up and shut down speed is "violent". You press the button for shutdown and things start closing faster than you've ever seen. Start is also just as fast.

Also, this thing is silent! Of course it should be since there are no moving parts. My other HDD was extremely quiet, but yes, there is a difference. Also, I've noticed a decrease in heat, which is good for the lap since my Asus in notorious for running a little warm on the bottom.

When it comes to programs I still am not completely sure as I have not put it through the paces. I have a game that I play, but never played it on this laptop before the SSD, though I am willing to bet the load times are much faster. Also, using chrome and having 8 gb of RAM I can open as many tabs as I want without hiccup.

Neutral: Coming back form hibernate is nearly instant, but I can't get my trackpad to respond for a couple seconds. Also, I cannot go straight back into the computer and must go through the log screen. I'm sure this is not the fault of the SSD, but it is something I will be working on.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that this thing is just too dang pretty to hide in the laptop. I was blown away by how awesome this little thing was and I wish I could show it off!

Other Comments: I used the Samsung SSD performance boosting program and it worked very well. For a novice user this may be enough. However, I went back through and checked everything it did manually and there were a couple of things that did not go through. Being a tinkerer at heart I was able to obtain peak performance following the SSD Optimization Guide from TheSSDReview.com. With this I was able to get more space, a little bit more speed and (hopefully) prolong the life of the SSD. I would like to warn users though to be careful which tweaks you choose based on your knowledge of the computer and the knowledge of others that will be using it.

Overall, this is a great addition to your computer. Though, I still may argue that RAM is more important. However, if your RAM is sufficient or maxed out, this would clearly be my next option.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have two SSD's. For some reason this tests with better specs, but performs horribly

I have this and a Kingston HyperX 3k. The specs on this one are better, but in the same laptop the HyperX blows it away. I've been to the forums, tried the settings/tweaks, and nothing helps. Mind you, I installed Win7 defaults with the HyperX and it performed beautifully. It's just a shame I needed to move that one to another machine before buying this.

I'll stick to Kingston from here on out. Don't get me wrong, this is an improvement over a conventional hard drive, but there are better models out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Fast and Easy to Install in 2012 MBP 13 base model

I just recently bought a MacBook Pro 13 inch base model because the other options were far too expensive for what you get as far as the 13 inch MBPs go. I knew I was going to upgrade to an ssd drive and the more expensive 13s were not worth it in my opinion. With the Samsung 830 256gb in my Mac I'm getting write speeds over 400 and read speads at a little over 500. Therefore I have paid 1,400 dollars for a computer that is not only cheaper than any other stock MBP but mine is also faster than any other stock laptop that apple makes!. If you ask me it's a no brainer. Before I had the 830 ssd I could not run games on my Mac at advanced setting without the game slowing down dramatically and lagging. Now my games start up in a third of the time and they run extremely well on advanced settings. I am so glad I purchased the Samsung. I desperately wanted this particular model because it recieved the best reviews and it is the most reliable from what I heard. It's more expensive than the 840 because let's be honest, it's better. Money was an issue for me so I purchased the 830 from warehouse deals at the low cost of $192.00. Other SSDs may be cheaper but they don't compare to this guy right here. If money is an issue for you also than do what I did and buy from warehouse deals in like new condition. Mine was definitely in new condition aside from the packaging being in a little rough shape but it appeared as though it had never even been opened and the ssd itself was immaculate! I'm very happy with my purchase and I am convinced that had I bought a brand new 830 the condition and outcome would have been the same. My boot up time was cut in half and my app time is essentially non existent, they boot up as fast as I can click them. The computer runs cool and silent. Do yourself a favor and do as I did. You won't regret it

4.0 out of 5 stars Good News and Bad News

This is a tale of almost a great product (and a mistake in the order I placed--see the update at the end):

I purchased the 256GB SSD, Amazon promised delivery in two days, from stock. Nearly two weeks later the drive arrived. That was inconvenient and mildly irritating, but I was happy to have the drive.

Installed it in my Dell laptop intending to clone the existing HDD. The Samsung product CD contained numerous Norton Ghost manuals in various languages, but not Norton Ghost (despite the claim in the product description). Grr. So I followed the directions in the Norton manual, downloaded a trial version, installed it and launched it. Turns out the drive cloning function is de-activated in the trial version. No activation code anywhere in the Samsung literature/packaging. I wanted to get on with things, so I paid for a Norton Ghost license. Double Grr.

Used Ghost (v15) to clone the HDD to the SSD, rebooted to the SSD and it worked, sort of. Some files had obviously not been copied (desktop settings were wrong, wifi passwords were missing...).

Used Ghost to make restore points of the HDD to an external USB drive. One created when running Ghost from Windows on the HDD, one booting from the Ghost CD and the HDD quiescent.

Tried lots of combinations of physical connections, Ghost options, never could get a clone to succeed. "Last" clone hung at 89% complete for days. Hit cancel. No visible change. Bad. Waited for a while (undoubtedly not long enough) and dropped the power. HDD is now corrupted, won't boot. Really bad.

Spent about a week in various attempts to restore the HDD from the restore points. Always hangs--for days. Several chat sessions with Norton support suggested various combinations of guesses at what might be wrong. No luck. Very sad now. Give Norton credit for requesting my telephone number and actually calling me multiple times to see if I had resolved things. I hadn't.

Bought another program, Avanquest Partition Comander, and used it to create partitions on the SSD. (Yes, I know Norton Ghost has partition editing capabilities, but sorry, I don't know the hex values to enter to set up the partition properly and be confident I have the values right. Some more intuitive assitance would have helped from Ghost there.)

Used Norton Ghost to do "file" restores from the restore point, one top level directory at a time into the new partition. A day later, all the files/directories were copied, re-booted--works fine! Hooray.

The SSD seems to be pretty snappy in performance, so that is good. No actual Norton Ghost product was bad, Norton Ghost problems were really bad, Norton support tried hard, so that was good. In the end, I'm back up and running. Was there pilot error somewhere along the line that caused Ghost to be unable to function correctly? I don't know. Having to pay to get a version of Ghost with the claimed features, that was bad.

    Caveat Emptor.

    Updated 27-AUG-12
It is my fault for not realizing the version of the drive I was purchasing was not the "laptop kit" version and therefore did not include Ghost. I compared a number of SSD products and when I came back to the Samsung I didn't come back to the exact model I wanted. My mistake. The drive is what I ordered and appears to work perfectly.

Not giving five stars because Amazon's fulfillment was slow. Product itself is fine.

After looking through many reviews between the Crucial m4 and this (samsung 830) I decided to go with the samsung. Shipping was quick and easy. I was planning on rebuilding my computer with a fresh reinstall of OSX Mt. Lion. So I removed my old Hybrid hdd and put in the SSD and had Mt. Lion on a bootable flash drive. When I tried to boot off the disk nothing would show up, I must have restarted my computer 20+ times. Nothing. So i tried booting off a disk, my friends computer, and every method to get this to read, nothing. So I took the SSD out and put in my old hybrid drive back in. I then hooked up the SSD via usb 2.0 and it showed up! So then i proceed to put Mt Lion on it, success! At that point I just swapped the SSD and Hybrid and again nothing worked, I continuously got the grey screen. So i checked firmware updates, they were up to date. At this point I'm frustrated that this SSD is not going to work so I packaged it back up and back to Amazon it went. Ordered the Crucial M4 hoping that will work!

Update (Nov 1, 2012) -> The Crucial M4 is kicking ass! No problems at all!! Go Crucial!
