Format it and it's good to go! *see update*
Updated to 4-stars from 2 [3/26/17]So after a few emails with WD Support instead of just sending this back to Amazon, I took it upon myself to do a long format on this SSD. Long format in that I unchecked the "Quick Format" box..I popped in my Kingston HyperX 120gb, reinstalled Windows for like the 3rd time that week, and did a format of this WD Blue. When everything was done, I opened up the WD Dashboard, and bam! Everything is good! Status says drive is good and the firmware updated. Speed is up to where it should be - passing my Kingston in 4 of 6 categories.SO just watch out, that you might have to format it right out of the box! Left off 1 star because of that fact..- - - - - - -I bought this to replace the 2 SSD's I had been running - one with OS and other with Adobe Suite and a few select games [Skyrim, which is slow loading on HDD]. The idea of having just one SSD and one less drive overall was great - coupled with the great reputation of WD Blue, how could you go wrong?!Well, installing it and plopping Windows 7 on it is where things went wrong. The first attempt at installing Win7 went ok for a week or two. Then suddenly the whole system came unglued... . It dropped to a slow performance and a literal 4 minute boot time. Not having any of that, I did a fresh wipe and tried it again. This time it boots at normal speed, as I've since isolated the problem driver, but this drive still preforms pretty slow.Looking up some benchmark/performance testing software, I ended up with a good ol' fashion UserBenchmark, and even that confirmed my system was about half the beast it was pre-WD Blue. I attached a screen shot of a drive-specific test for you to see how abysmal it really was! Barely better than my aging Toshiba 2TB HDD!The 2nd Windows7 install on this Blue drive gave the proper 20-30 second boot time, but then quickly started having lags in window response times, desktop response times, and overall Explorer.exe responsiveness. Really?!Doing some more searching on SSD-optimizing software, I found that WD actually released a Dashboard for their new SSD line. That would've been nice to know right off the bat...So I installed it and immediately it tells me the drive is bad. Great...There was also a Firmware update. ...Great, one more piece of equipment that needs to be kept up-to-date.Then it tells me it's not compatible with my system. What??It's not a driver incompatibility, it's the drive. Since when is a hard drive not compatible with a computer system?!?! WHATT?!WesternDigital, I expected so much better from you! Looks like i'm returning it and putting back my HyperX 120gb.Only reason I give this WD Blue 2 stars is on the chance that I just happened to get a lemon. Otherwise it's been a 0-1 star experience.

This drive is not the fastest ssd drive, but it is more than fast enough. This drive has a partial metal case and feels very sturdy.
Easy to setup on Linux.......I cant respond to using this with Windows but it should work fine.
Several times more expensive than a spinning drive, but several times faster.
I have two of these drives and would recommend.
Update: The drives are still running fine but wanted to mention if your using an SSD drive via a USB external drive. SSD drives need to be powered up or turned on at least once a year, other wise you could risk data loss. Some say you could stretch it 2 years but why risk it. All you have to do is power it on and let run for a few minutes and your good for another year. I power my drives on every few months.
So you can use SSD drive or archiving you just have to be aware of this difference compared to a spinning hard drive.

Bought this SSD because I've always used WD Black HDD's in my PC. I wanted to get a Western Digital Black SSD but could not find one in the sata 6 variant only m.2 so I grabed this WD Blue SSD instead. I wanted the Samsung 850 evo but this one was on sale for 85 dollars. This is my first SSD and took me about 5 mins to install and worked like a charm. I instantly went to test it's speed. My WD Black HDD's read and write around 130-150 mb's. This SSD reads for me between 410-425 mb's and write's between 375 and 400 mb's. I'm sure there are faster and better SSD's out there but for 85 dollars I am very happy with it. Much much faster than my WD Black HDD's. Only wish I had got the 1TB version instead of the 250GB one as now I want everything on the SSD instead of the HDD due to it being so much quicker. If you just want a good SSD that works great and is plenty fast for the price I think this one is great. 85 dollars for 250GB SSD is hard to top.

For $89 it is an amazing upgrade to my 4 year old laptop. Between the ssd and eliminating bloatware boot time is about 10 seconds. My HP Pavilion G7's hdd crapped out and I needed a quick replacement so I ordered a new Dell Inspiron to replace it. I was searching for a cheap hdd replacement just to see if I could fix the old laptop and came across this ssd for $89. Expecting the install of the ssd and windows to be a big deal I set it aside until I had a full day to commit to the install. I had the drive mounted in less than 5 minutes and following instruction found on the internet I was able to reinstall Windows 10 very easily. Probably less than 30 minutes actually "doing" and maybe an hour or so "downloading" or "installing". I can't say exactly how much time "downloading" or "installing" actually took because I got busy with other things while "downloading" and "installing". I must comment that Microsoft did a great job making a clean reinstall really easy and free. Only down side is I prefer the old laptop now because with the ssd it is faster than the Inspiron... so the Inspiron was a waste of money since I only use it for backup on it's 1.5 TB hdd at this point. I like the led display on the Inspiron better than the Pavilion so maybe when they get cheap enough I'll get a 1 TB ssd and try cloning the hdd in the Dell.

      Capacity: 250GBStyle: 2D NAND 2.5” SSDVerified Purchase
In spite of the fact that specific programs to qualify HD performance – including Windows Checkdisk – reported that our disk were OK, I bought two of these SS disks – which are not disk anymore – to replace old, conventional spinning disks used to store programs and data in our computers. We planned to clone the existing disks and replace the old disks, using a program provided by W. Digital and created by Acronis, to carry out such task. According to the instructions, the operation was supposed to be very easily accomplished. As simple as: Install SSD, clone existing, replace existing and that’s all. Well, in my personal experience, that was not at all that easy. To begin with, the SSD were not detected automatically by Windows; even using Windows Administrative Tools it was not immediate for the OS to recognize them completely. The SSD had to be formatted, and the formatting should be exactly the same as the original disk to be cloned, for the cloning be possible. The instructions provided by the cloning program are really minimal. I had to try a number of tricks and different setups to make the OS see the disks, and the cloning program do they job. However, once I solved all the inconveniences – which probably were due to problems in our computers caused by the original HD which were far more defective than reported by supervisory programs, the performance of the computers improved immensely. The change in performance of our computers was worth all the perspiration, time and trials that I had to go through in order to make the system work as expected. If the performance of the computers does not deteriorate with time, and the SSD are dependable and have a reasonable long life, I strongly recommend this product.

The 1 TB Internal drive works great. No problems partitioning the drive manually with Acronis software the free downloaded version from the WD digital website. I had to activate the other HDD (data) drive in Windows 10 when I finished the clone procedure on my primary drive. It was pretty straight forward with the Acronis software. My boot up time was cut in half with installing the Solid State Drive. Very happy with this Solid State Drive so far and the cloning of the original HDD drive worked flawlessly.
