Gaming AestheticsYour gaming rig is very much an extension of who you are. Express your style and personality with custom RGB lighting on the ROG Strix X99 Gaming thanks to ASUS Aura. Easily expand your case lighting with the onboard 4-pin RGB header (compatible with standard 5050 strips) and sync all the lighting zones together for a system that really stands out. Included STRIX decals in a variety of colors make color-matching a breeze. |
Connect with Unparalleled SpeedASUS X99-A II supports a myriad of ultra-fast connectivity options such as onboard USB 3.1 for breakneck 10Gb/s transfer speeds over both USB 3.1 Type-A and reversible Type-C connections, revolutionary U.2 and M.2 connectivity with support for the latest NVMe storage solutions and up to 32Gb/s transfers. |
SafeSlotSafeSlot is the PCIe slot reinvented by ASUS and engineered to provide superior retention and shearing resistance. Manufactured in a single step using a new insert-molding process integrates the slot with the fortifying metal for an inherently stronger slot, which is then firmly anchored to the PCB through additional solder points. |

After reading all the neg reviews I was very apprehensive in buying this, but I'm glad I did. It has great aesthetics, features and seems very reliable so far and I've been using it about a month now.
NOTE: I saw that another user had originally blamed Asus for a faulty motherboard only to discover that his Broadwell-E CPU was bad. Well, THIS HAPPENED TO ME! It's NEVER the CPU! Well it's never the CPU, until it is. I literally exhausted every angle, down to swapping out the PSU and nothing helped. Threw a Haswell-E chip in there, BAM! It booted right up. I tried my (faulty) Broadwell-E in another machine and again it wouldn't boot. I returned the CPU for an exchange and haven't had a problem so far. This was a 6900K btw. So I'm just wondering how many of these bad reviews are based off reasons that concern a faulty CPU and NOT the motherboard. There are comments all over reddit, tom's hardware and anadtech that folks are getting DOA Broadwell-E chips. Just something to think about and troubleshoot if you run into an issue.
Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase, and considering motherboards, ASUS has yet to let me down. Good luck!
I would have liked to have seen Asus pre-install and ship the motherboard out with the included black/silver stickers, as I'm sure that will match more builds naturally, and I wish some of the top fan headers would have been moved to the right of the board, instead of bunched up on the left, but those were minor complains that required a few more steps than usual.
I was able to support everything that I needed it to, including an NVMe drive, USB 3.1, and even a good overclock @4.5GHz on my 5820k, though I haven't tried to mess with anything past 4.5.
I bought this in the middle of December 2016, and used it for roughly 2-3 weeks. Working perfectly, temps were awesome, no voltage issues, nothing out of the ordinary. My system was rock solid, as I have expected from ASUS, as I've used their boards for my last 3 builds.
Then it dies. Go through all of the usual troubleshooting steps; check RAM, removing GPUs, checking PSU, etc. Nothing works. Q-Code 00, and the PC only turns on briefly with no post or bios. So I did what any normal person would do; check the internet to see if others encountered this problem. Yup. Multiple people. All of them report fried CPUs with the culprit being this motherboard. Didn't think it could happen, and it did. Don't buy this board, or any other X99 board from ASUS as I'm reading most of their X99 lineup has issues as well.
The audio works fine out of the box in Ubuntu, so I am a bit confused as to why this was only happening in Windows, especially after the first board had no issues running off of the default Microsoft drivers for about a month.
There is a 3 year warranty on the board, so I guess its off to RMA land if the audio chip is defective on this one too.
I suspect this memory slot issue is fairly common with the ROG Strix X99 Gaming as Luke from Linus Tech Tips had a similar issue with the Strix X99 he installed in his mood rock PC build on a recent YouTube video. It is a shame that ASUS has these kinds of issues as I have always found its products to be first rate. The tech support process was fairly straight forward and the RMS process went well but if this had been my only computer, I would have been very upset about loosing its use for the ten days or so turnaround it took to get the new board.
Overall the ROG Strix X99 Gaming motherboard is a nice product but with the release of a new batch of Z270 Kaby Lake motherboards, the Strix X99 is starting to appear a little dated. Still, the board is a solid performer and fits well into the aesthetic of my RGB enthusiast build.
